Bet on Yourself: A Journey into Wellness, Strength, and Self-Discovery By Adenike Adesola

Sometimes, the most great decisions don’t look big in the moment but they look like showing up for a walk.

For Adenike, joining SistaWalk was one of those decisions. What started as a simple step toward staying active quickly unfolded into something far more meaningful such as a journey rooted in intention, self-awareness, and connection.

In over a year, that one decision has broaden how she approaches her wellness, not as a task to complete, but as a lifestyle to nurture. Through movement, community, and moments of reflection, Adenike has discovered a deeper understanding of her body, her strength, and what it truly means to invest in her health.

Her story is a true reminder that transformation doesn’t always come from drastic changes. Sometimes, it begins quietly with the courage to start, the commitment to continue, and the belief that you are worth the effort.

Find Energy in the Right Community

Joining SistaWalk has been one of the most exciting decisions I’ve made in recent times.

Even before becoming part of the group, I was already very interested in total wellness; physically, mentally, and emotionally. But there is something powerful about being surrounded by people who share that same commitment.

Walking with SistaWalk brought a completely different kind of energy into my life.

It’s one thing to pursue wellness on your own but it’s another to be part of a community that encourages you, uplifts you, and walks alongside you on that journey. Being around women who are equally intentional about their well-being lifted my spirit in ways I didn’t expect.

It made the journey feel lighter, more joyful, and more meaningful.

A Moment That Sparked Awareness

I’ve had many positive experiences since joining SistaWalk, but one moment stands out clearly for me.

During one of our cultural events, we had different activities, including rope jump as part of the cultural games led by Joyful Noise Family Entertainment. It was fun, engaging, and brought out a sense of childlike joy.

But in the middle of that activity, I experienced something unexpected, I felt weakness in my knees.

That moment stayed with me.

Not because it discouraged me, but because it awakened something important.

It pushed me to pay closer attention to my body.

Since then, I’ve taken steps to understand and address the underlying issue, and in doing so, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for practical fitness. I’ve learned that true wellness is not just about movement; it’s about balanced movement. It’s about strengthening different muscle groups, listening to your body, and responding with care.

That experience shifted my perspective.

It reminded me that every moment, even the uncomfortable ones can be an opportunity to grow stronger.

Where Culture and Wellness Meet

It’s not just about physical activity; it’s about shared stories, lived experiences, and learning from one another at each walk.

I’ve had the privilege of being part of conversations and moments that go beyond walking. One that stood out was during a Sistawalk cultural event, when a fellow member's, (Natu) storytelling and insights about her home country, Tanzania. It offered a beautiful insight about her home country, heritage and culture.

Moments like that create space for understanding, appreciation, and connection. They remind me that wellness is not only about the body, it’s also about identity, belonging, and being seen.

SistaWalk has given me a space where I can express myself fully and authentically without hesitation.

I truly treasure the ability to express myself with total authenticity, supported by a community that understands my voice and cultural context without apology.

What Keeps Me Showing Up

At the core of everything is a simple but powerful motivation: I want to live a healthy life, prevent chronice illness and maintain my mobility as i grow older. I want to also be strong, capable and independent for years to come.

That internal desire is what keeps me going.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about consistency. It’s about making choices today that will support the life I want tomorrow.

And every step I take is part of that commitment.

A Message to Women Starting Their Wellness Journey

To any woman who is thinking about starting her wellness journey but feels unsure, I would say this:

Bet on yourself....

Your health is your wealth.

It’s something we often take for granted until we experience what it truly means to have it, or to lose it. But when you begin to prioritize your well-being, everything changes.

You feel stronger, more in control and feel more alive.

And the best part?

You don’t have to do it alone.

SistaWalk is truly a safe space, a place where you can begin, grow, and thrive at your own pace, surrounded by women who are on the same journey.

So take that first step.

Trust yourself enough to start.

Because when you choose your health, you are choosing your future.

March Spotlight Reflection: Bet on Yourself, Your Health is Your Wealth!

There comes a moment in every wellness journey when the biggest decision is not about the perfect routine, the right outfit, or the best timing.

It is the decision to believe that you are worth the effort.

Adenike’s story reminds us that wellness begins with a choice; the choice to bet on yourself.

To choose growth, awareness, a healthier future and the belief that your future is worth investing in.

Her journey reflects the power of being intentional about your well-being while staying open to learning more about your body, your strength, and your capacity to grow.

This month, let her story remind us that every woman deserves to invest in her health, her peace, and her future.

Because when you bet on yourself, you are not waiting for change; You are becoming It!

Walking in Wellness and Living with Intention By Dr. Cecilia Bukutu

For over three years, Cecilia Bukutu has been an integral part of the SistaWalk community. What began as a simple desire for a consistent and manageable form of exercise has evolved into a deeply enriching lifestyle and one rooted in wellness, connection, and purpose.

In Cecilia’s journey, walking is no longer just a form of exercise. It is a pathway to health, a space for community, and a commitment to living fully.

Finding What Works And Making It Stick

For a long time, I was searching for something that could help me stay consistent with my health and fitness.

I tried different things, gyms, structured workout plans but nothing truly stuck. It either felt too complicated or too difficult to maintain. I needed something simple, something that could naturally fit into my routine without overthinking it.

Then a friend introduced me to SistaWalk.

And everything changed.

Walking with SistaWalk gave me exactly what I had been looking for. It was simple, consistent, and effective. It didn’t feel forced and it just became a natural part of my life wellness journey.

But more than that, it became something meaningful that i look forward every week.

Where Wellness Meets Community

SistaWalk reflects something very important to me: community and social connection.

It brings people together, especially women from diverse backgrounds, to focus on something that truly matters: Our Health.

Some of the most meaningful, funny, and insightful conversations happen while walking side by side with other women.

There’s something powerful about that shared space. It’s safe, supportive, and uplifting.

It’s a place where I can take care of my body while also nourishing my mind.

Beyond the walks, SistaWalk has introduced me to a broader sense of community. Through our grassroots initiatives, we share ideas about growing individual healthy foods in our homes and connect through home gardening. That part of the journey has added another layer to my wellness, one that feels holistic and deeply fulfilling.

What started as a walking group has become a full approach to healthy living.

I feel healthier.

I feel empowered.

I feel more content.

I’m very aware of the challenges our communities face when it comes to health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. These are real issues shaped by social, economic, and environmental factors.

For me, SistaWalk is a safe space where we prioritize our well-being, support one another, and take active steps toward healthier lives. It aligns with my values of self-care, collective strength, and long-term wellness.

Moments That Matter

I’ve had so many memorable experiences with SistaWalk, but the ones that stand out the most are the hiking trips up in Alberta's pristine mountain scape and the run/walks in support of important community causes have become special highlights I really look forward to.

There’s something about being out in pure nature that just feels right.

The peace of the forest.

The fresh air.

The views stretching out before you.

The camaraderie and sisterhood along the trail.

Every hike brings a sense of calm and clarity. It feels like a reset and a reminder to slow down, to breathe, and to take care of myself.

I also deeply value the moments we come together with fellow SistaWalkers in supporting causes that matter, such as the Indigenous Orange Shirt walk/run initiative by Indigenous Runner group, which honours and remembers the experiences of Indigenous children and supports reconciliation.

These experiences go beyond movement and they connect us to purpose.

Why I Keep Showing Up

I’ve experienced two episodes of poor health in my life, and those moments changed how I see everything. They made me realize how valuable it is to be physically well.

I want to maintain my health, not just for myself, but for my family, especially my children.

I love to travel.

I value my independence.

I want to keep living life fully as I grow older.

Taking care of my health gives me the strength and freedom to do all of that.

That’s why I keep showing up for myself, for my family, and for my community.

A Message to Women Considering Walking

If you’re thinking about walking but feel unsure, I understand the hesitation; the questions, the self-doubt, the “what if I can’t keep up?” or “what if I don’t know anyone?”

But the truth is, you don’t need to have it all figured out before you start.

SistaWalk is a welcoming and safe space where you can show up exactly as you are. There’s no pressure, no expectations, and no judgment. You don’t have to be fit, experienced, or even confident. All you need is the willingness to take that first step.

You come when you can.

You walk at your own pace.

You grow in your own time.

And along the way, something beautiful happens.

You begin to feel stronger not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. You find yourself surrounded by women who encourage you, support you, and celebrate you. You realize you’re part of something bigger than yourself but a community that genuinely cares.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Moments of joy you didn’t even know you needed.

And it’s filled with amazing women from all walks of life.

Sometimes, the hardest part is simply starting but once you do, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Why not give it a try?

February Spotlight Reflection: The Power of Choosing Yourself

Cecilia’s story is a wonderful reminder that wellness does not have to be complicated to be transformational. Sometimes, the most sustainable change begins with something simple such as showing up, taking a step, and staying consistent. Her journey reflects the quiet power of choosing what works, staying committed, and allowing community to carry you forward.

For many women, especially those balancing family, work, and community responsibilities, choosing yourself can feel unfamiliar and even uncomfortable. We are often used to showing up for others first. But what happens when we begin to include ourselves in that care?

We begin to heal.We begin to grow.We begin to reclaim our strength.

Choosing yourself is not selfish, it is necessary.

It is choosing to protect your health so you can be present for the people you love. It is choosing movement as medicine. It is choosing community as support. It is choosing consistency over perfection.

Cecilia didn’t find transformation through complexity, she found it through simplicity, through walking, showing up, through staying committed to her well-being.

You don’t have to do everything. You just have to begin.

This month, let this be your reminder:

Choose yourself again and again.

Choose the walk.

Choose the fresh air.

Choose the conversations that uplift you.

Choose the version of you that feels stronger, healthier, and more at peace.

Because every step you take toward your wellness is a step toward the life you deserve.

And you are worth that choice!

Pursue Your Peak with Purpose By Dr. Maroro Zinyemba

Some journeys begin with a single step. Others begin with a decision, to show up, to move, and to believe in what’s possible.

For Maroro, her story with SistaWalk has become a journey of endurance, healing, and deep personal discovery. One that has stretched from weekly Saturday morning walks and seasonal hikes, to the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Maroro has been part of SistaWalk for more than three years. What started as a weekly commitment to movement has grown into a ritual of grounding, resilience, and belonging.

“SistaWalk has transformed my wellness in ways I never expected. What began as a simple Saturday walk quickly became a grounding ritual, one that nourishes my body, restores my mind, and uplifts my spirit.”

Walking 10 km each week strengthened her endurance, improved her sleep, and reconnected her with the healing power of nature. But in December 2025, that foundation carried her into something extraordinary.

What Kilimanjaro Taught Me

Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro had been on my bucket list for a couple of years. The dream first took root during SistaWalk’s seasonal guided hikes with our incredible professional guide, Lucinda. That experience opened my eyes, not only to the power of group adventure, but to the thrill of discovering new landscapes, new plants, and new versions of myself.

So when the opportunity came to travel to Tanzania and hike part of Kilimanjaro, I knew, I felt, it was time.

In December 2025, five friends and I set out together, full of anticipation and excitement. We hiked the Marangu Route, known for its lush montane rainforest and remarkable biodiversity. Our destination was Mandara Hut, sitting 2,720 metres above sea level. The hike was 16 km round-trip, although my Fitbit enthusiastically recorded 21 km by the end!

It was a hiker’s dream day: sunshine, warm temperatures in the high 20s, birds singing through the forest canopy. We started just before 10 a.m and once we stepped onto the trail, time simply… disappeared.

I was fully immersed, watching for unfamiliar plants and animals, listening to the wind, and absorbing the energy of a landscape unlike any I’d known before. It was a full-day adventure, one that left an imprint on both my body and my spirit.

“Kilimanjaro challenged me physically, emotionally, and mentally. At various points I faced three choices, turn back, freeze, or push forward.”

Our guides repeated a simple Swahili mantra: “Pole pole” slowly, slowly. And I held onto it. This hike wasn’t about rushing. It was about intention.

At one point, staring up at a steep incline, I had to sit down. My leg threatened to cramp, and my breathing felt tight. That moment could have been a breaking point but instead, it became a turning point.

I paused.I breathed.I grounded myself.

And then pole pole!! I stood up again.

What Carried Me Up the Mountain

So many things carried me forward that day:

  • Sips of water and mango juice

  • The steady support of my walking stick

  • Birds calling through the trees

  • The wind cooling my face

  • Small goals “Just get to that tree”

  • Encouragement from our guides: “Don’t give up”

  • And a quiet inner voice whispering: “You can do hard things.”

And I did!!!!

Reaching Mandara Hut wasn’t just a physical achievement, it was a reclaiming of peace. Away from the noise and pressures of daily life, I felt held by nature, humbled by the mountain, and deeply grateful for the strength in my legs and feet. They carried me farther than I ever imagined.

When the hike ended and I finally sat down, legs tired, heart full; I reflected on everything the mountain had taught me: patience, perseverance, and purpose.

That’s when my mantra for 2026 became clear:

“Pursue Your Peak with Purpose.”

It’s a reminder to climb slowly, intentionally, and with meaning, whether on a mountain trail or in everyday life.

Sometimes the most profound journeys aren’t rushed, they are taken slowly, intentionally, and with deep respect for the land beneath your feet.

“Kilimanjaro revealed muscles I didn’t know I had. But it also revealed a deep inner resilience I’ll carry forward. I’ve made a promise to honour my legs and feet, train them, and keep them strong for whatever peaks come next.”

Community, Culture & Why SistaWalk Matters

As women, especially women from diverse cultural backgrounds, many of us are raised knowing that community is where strength comes from. We thrive when we are surrounded by people who understand us, uplift us, and see us fully.

SistaWalk offers that space.

The camaraderie and friendships formed around a shared commitment to health reflect the values I grew up with: collective care, mutual support, and resilience. Walking together mirrors how we move through life, stronger when we do it side by side.

Why I Keep Showing Up

I keep showing up because movement and community are medicine.

Walking with others strengthens me physically, grounds me emotionally, and reminds me that wellness is not a solo journey. Being part of a supportive community inspires me to care for myself and knowing that my presence might uplift someone else motivates me to return, week after week.

A Message to Women Considering Walking

If you’re unsure or hesitant, this is what I want you to know:

Go for it....

Every step counts toward a healthier you. You don’t need to be “fit” or experienced, just willing to take that first step. We’ve all felt unsure at some point. But once you join, you’ll realize something powerful:

You’re not walking alone!

January Spotlight Reflection

Maroro’s journey reminds us that resilience is built step by step, breath by breath, and community by community. It’s about choosing to continue, even when the incline is steep. It’s about trusting that each intentional step is shaping a stronger, more grounded version of you.

Whether your mountain is a trail, a personal goal, a career transition, healing, a garden or simply learning to show up for yourself, remember this: you were never meant to climb alone.

Community gives us courage when our legs feel tired. It reminds us of our capacity when doubt gets loud. It celebrates the small wins that eventually become life-changing milestones. Every shared walk, every conversation, every moment of encouragement strengthens the path ahead.

And as you pursue your own peak, at your own pace, know this:

We see you. We believe in you. And we’re walking with you.
