Empowering Voices: SistaWalk Community Storytelling & Member Spotlight. July 2026 Spotlight — Gloria Irene Kinabo

Representation Creates Possibility By Gloria .I. Kinabo

There are moments in life when transformation arrives quietly. Not with dramatic resolutions or life-altering events, but through ordinary choices repeated often enough that they begin to shape who we become.

For Gloria, that choice looked remarkably simple: saying yes to a Saturday morning walk!

She joined SistaWalk expecting to become more active. What she didn't expect was to discover a community that would challenge long-held assumptions about fitness, introduce her to hiking experince, celebrate some of life's biggest milestones, and remind her that representation isn't just important; it can be life-changing.

Today, walking is no longer something Gloria tries to fit into her schedule.

It has become part of how she cares for herself.

Redefining What Wellness Looks Like

If you had asked me a few years ago what counted as exercise, my answer would have been simple.

If I wasn't drenched in sweat or completely exhausted by the end of a workout, I probably wouldn't have considered it "real" exercise.

Joining SistaWalk completely changed that mindset. Walking is one of the most accessible forms of movement.

I don't need a gym membership, expensive equipment, or hours carved out of my day. I simply need a comfortable pair of shoes and the willingness to move in action.

Instead of chasing intense workouts that were difficult to sustain, I started embracing consistency and that realization was incredibly freeing.

I've learned that movement doesn't have to be extreme to be effective. In fact, the healthiest habits are often the ones we can continue long after motivation fades.

Walking has also become one of my favourite ways to regulate my emotions. Whenever life feels overwhelming, work becomes stressful, or I simply need space to think, I head outside.

The rhythm of walking has a way of settling my mind.

Problems become smaller.

Thoughts become clearer.

By the time I return home, I usually feel lighter than when I left.

I've come to understand that every walk is doing far more than strengthening my body; it is taking care of my mental and emotional well-being too.

The Walk That Became Marriage Advice

Some of the most meaningful conversations don't happen across a dining table or inside a classroom.

Sometimes they happen while walking beside people who genuinely care about you.

One of my favourite SistaWalk memories came shortly after I got engaged. The Sistawalk Community was genuinely so happy for me and i felt so celebrated.

The excitement and celebration from the women in the group was so genuine that I immediately felt surrounded by people who were truly happy for me.

There were Saturday morning walks, where conversations naturally shifted toward marriage.

Women who had been married for decades began sharing their stories, not as experts, but as women speaking honestly from lived experience.

They talked about what they wished they had known before getting married, shared lessons learned through difficult seasons and kindly laughed about the little things no one tells you before the wedding day.

Most importantly, they spoke with kindness and without judgment.

Looking back, I can honestly say I received some of the best marriage advice during those Saturday morning walks........more than I did from the six-week, $500 premarital counselling course my fiancé and I attended.

That experience reminded me of something I'll never forget:

Wisdom also grows in community.

There is something incredibly special about women who are willing to celebrate your milestones while also preparing you for what comes next.

SistaWalk didn't just give me a walking group.

It gave me a village!

Representation Creates Possibility

For much of my life in Canada, I often found myself as the only Black or African person in many spaces.

Over time, I realized something, without even meaning to, I had started placing limits on the experiences I believed belonged to me.

I've always been curious about hiking.

I would ask coworkers for recommendations and trail suggestions. They always encouraged me, but somehow I never took that first trip.

Part of me wondered whether I'd fit in. Whether I'd feel comfortable. Whether I belonged.

It may seem like a small thing, but representation matters. When you see people who look like you doing something, it quietly expands what feels possible for you too.

Through SistaWalk, I experienced hiking in a way that felt welcoming, safe, and inclusive.

That one experience gave me the confidence to pursue something I'd wanted to do for years.

Today, when I see women from different backgrounds exploring trails together, I see more than people enjoying nature.

I see possibility.

I see belonging.

I see permission for others to believe, "There's a place for me here too."

Showing Up Changes More Than You

When I first joined SistaWalk, I came for the physical benefits.

That was my motivation.

But somewhere along the way, something shifted. I found consistency, built meaningful friendships and I strengthened relationships with friends I would invite to join me because, even when life became busy, Saturday mornings gave us an opportunity to reconnect.

Those weekly conversations became something we could count on. I also keep showing up because I know representation matters.

Seeing women who look like me prioritize their health, enjoy the outdoors, and encourage one another, inspires me every single week.

I hope that by continuing to show up, someone else who is standing on the sidelines wondering if they belong, might see what's possible.

Because I know exactly how that feels. I've also learned that wellness isn't about perfection.

It's about choosing yourself often enough that those choices become part of your life.

That's what keeps bringing me back.

A Message to women struggling in their Wellness Journey

If someone struggling to keep up with your wellness journey, I'd simply say this:

Just continue to show up! Or Join Sistwalk Community!

You don't need to have everything figured out, you don't need to be outgoing and you really don't even need to know anyone.

I'm naturally quite reserved, and making new friends has never come easily to me.

When I first joined, I came with a friend and mostly stayed close to them during the walks.

No one pressured me to socialize and No one expected me to immediately become part of every conversation and People simply let me be myself.

That meant everything.

One of the things I appreciate most about SistaWalk is that everyone meets you where you are. If your goal is simply to get your steps in, that's enough.

If today you can walk two kilometres, wonderful! If you're ready for five, that's wonderful too!

There is no competition. No pressure. No expectation beyond showing up for yourself.

And sometimes, that's exactly where confidence begins.

The Habit That Changed My Life

Looking back, my biggest transformation isn't measured by kilometres; Its measure by consistency.

Two years ago, walking 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day felt completely unrealistic.

Between a full-time desk job and being in school, I couldn't imagine fitting that into my life. And today, I walk at least 10,000 steps four to five days every week.

Some weeks, I reach that goal every single day.

I never imagined I'd become the person who genuinely looks forward to moving every day. Its even more rewarding, seeing that habit spread beyond me.

These days, my cousins and my mom regularly join me for evening walks around our neighbourhood.

They may not always appreciate seeing my name pop up on their phones at 8:00 p.m. with a message telling them to "lace up," but those walks have become part of our family's rhythm.

It's funny how one decision can ripple outward. And perhaps that's the greatest lesson SistaWalk has taught me.

When you invest in yourself, you often inspire others to do the same.

July Spotlight Reflection: Representation Creates Possibility

Gloria’s story reminds us that wellness is not defined by exhaustion, perfection, or intense routines. It can begin with accessible movement, a welcoming community, and the confidence to enter spaces where we may not have previously seen ourselves represented.

Through SistaWalk, Gloria discovered that consistency can transform a simple walk into a sustainable lifestyle. She also found a village of women who celebrate milestones, share honest wisdom, and create space for one another to belong.

Her journey shows us why representation matters. When women see others who look like them hiking, exploring nature, and prioritizing their health, new possibilities begin to feel within reach.

At SistaWalk, we believe wellness should meet every woman where she is. Whether she comes to walk 5 kilometres, reconnect with a friend, clear her mind, or try something new; showing up is enough.

Because when one woman finds the confidence to take up space, she quietly gives another woman permission to do the same.
